Wet weather can wreak havoc on your workplace

Wednesday 03, Sep 2025

Wet weather is more than just an inconvenience—it is a serious safety risk that can put lives on the line.

Whether you are on-site or working alone offsite, rain, mud, and poor visibility can turn everyday tasks into high-risk situations. As the wet season sets in, workers and businesses must take proactive steps to manage the hazards and keep everyone safe.

Slippery surfaces are among the most immediate dangers. Ladders, scaffolds, and platforms immediately become unstable, increasing the chance of falls. Workers should be equipped with proper non-slip gear, and every effort must be made to keep surfaces dry where possible.

Even more hazardous are the electrical risks that spike during wet conditions. Water and power tools are a dangerous mix, and without proper waterproof covers and ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), the risk of electrocution is real.

Poor visibility caused by rain, mist, or fog makes it harder for workers to see and be seen. High-visibility clothing and sufficient lighting are not just precautions, they are essential for preventing accidents.

Unstable ground is another hidden hazard. Mud and softened soil can cause slips, trips, and even ground collapse. Where possible, ground should be reinforced with gravel, and dangerous zones should be clearly marked to prevent accidents.

Beyond physical risks, wet weather can lead to costly project delays and material damage. Curing times are affected, painting becomes impractical, and materials like timber and plasterboard can be ruined if not stored correctly. Covering and securing materials can help avoid setbacks and unnecessary costs.

To stay safe and productive in wet conditions, worksites must plan ahead. That includes providing waterproof clothing, gloves, and non-slip boots, controlling site drainage and vehicle access, and always having a wet-weather emergency plan ready.

The bottom line is simple: wet weather does not have to stop work, but only if you are prepared. Protect your team. Protect your business.
